Don’t Always Judge A Book By Its Cover

Most people beleive that Rottweilers are terrible dogs to have and I’m telling my story so that people will be able to see the side of Rottweilers that only a true Rottweiler lovers can see. Jake is a really big dog weighing at over a 100 pounds and his looks can be intimidating but Jake is the kindest dog you will ever meet.He enjoys being around kids and when we lived on a lake he would go into the lake with the neighbor kids and even bark when the children went out into the water too far.It all started last Spring. He always makes me laugh by acting silly and is there to protect my 7 month old daughter and I at night while my fiancee is working the night shift.I know as long as hes by my side nothing will happen to me because he is very protective of me and grown very protective of my daughter,Madison as well.I’ve never seen a dog with such energy and athleticism. In the winter time,he enjoys having a huge shovel full of snow tossed into the air just so he can jump up and bite at it and during the summer,he enjoys swimming and going to the park. Summer time is the hardest for him because of him being half husky but he doesn’t seem to let that bother him too much because he is in high speed outside even in the humid summer sun.Jake is a very smart dog.He can be stubborn at times and chooses not to listen but he is very intelligent. When my boyfriend and I are talking about certain things,we must spell the words out because he will get know what we are talking about. There are over 150 words that we must spell out while talking in front of him. A really special story I would like to share about him took place last spring.I was sitting on my couch watching television and Jake walked up to me and rested his head on my stomach and just looked at me.My boyfriend noticed this but just dismissed it as him just showing affection for me because Jake and I share a very special unbreakable bond. As the days went by he would do this more and more. Then,he started to do something new.I spent the whole day cleaning my house and I was standing up cleaning the pantry when he grabbed onto my pant leg, very gentle.I looked down at him and smiled and told him to go play with his toys. But he refused to let go of my pant leg.He was pulling it really hard and I lost my balance and fell.He proceeded to drag me over to the couch…all the while being so careful not to hurt me.I finally understood what he was trying to tell me.He wanted me to sit down. Two days, later I found out I was pregnant and my doctor explained to me that the reason why Jake had been acting weird around me such as resting his head on my stomach and pulling my pant leg so I would sit down was becuase he sensed I was pregnant and did want me getting up. As my pregnancy progressed he became more and more protective of me and followed me everywhere I went.He ever became a bit agressive when people would come to viset. He would simply growl and show his teeth but never bit anyone and this happened only when someone made a fast move towards me such as to give me a hug.At night,he would sleep in bed with me with his head rested on my stomach the whole night. My doctor and Vet recommended that I take him with me to an apointment so that he may hear the baby’s heart beat. When that day came,He listened very closely to the heart beating and looked at my belly and then licked it. The last month of my pregnancy I was put on bed rest for extreme swelling of my legs.It was in the winter so thats when Jake most wanted to be outside.I was sitting with my feet propped up and he walked over and sat his leash into my lap.I got up and hooked the leash to him to take him out.Walking down the stairs he stayed with me the whole time and didn’t yank on the leash or rush ahead but simply walked down each individual step with me.As soon as I walked outside I started to slip on a patch of ice and Jake stood under me while I fell so I landed up on his back.He didn’t not move at all.Just stood there and let me use his back to get back up. After Madison was born Jake still remained close to me but also with Madison. The first month or two while she was sleeping in my room,Jake would sleep next to her bassinet and would follow her where ever she was.Once she started sleeping in her own room he began sleeping under her crib.He would come and swipe his paws on my legs to let me know if she was waking up and really kept an eye on her.He didn’t like when people that he didn’t know would hold her so during these times he would practically stand right next to the person. Jake and Madison share a very special friendship. They are inseperable.I always laugh becuase Jake will go into his toy box and get a soft toy and put it by Madison to play with,I will go and take it away and he will keep doing it.He lets her pull on his hair to pull herself up and pushes her bottle over to her when she wines. He truelly is a great dog. Most people say never to leave a dog alone with a infant but I trust Jake with my life and I know he would never harm her. So just because rottweilers, well, any dog for that matter have a bad reputation.Don’t always beleive that.It depends on how you raise them. R.M. Michigan,USA
