Sally, the abandonded rottie

Sally came to us via my son who took her in when her owner no longer wanted her. She had been found in a parking lot and they kept her for a few months before simply turning her out. Sally was a Rottweiler who had been used as a puppy machine. We had no good knowledge or feelings about a rottie but my son convinced us to keep her since he knew her. She was about 3 yrs old and didn’t have a name we knew. While my husband and I were discussing our former neighbors, Bruce and Sally, we discovered she responded to the word Sally. In fact she smiled at us, so that was her name. Since I raise parrots and often have lots of babies around she HAD to tolerate them. She would be laying on the floor and this particular species at the time numbered six. They were Green Cheek Conures and are smaller than Cockatiels. They would run around in a huddle, crossing over her feet and preening her toes and eyes. When she had enough she would wait until they all left her and then quickly go to my husband’s office and hide under the desk. Never once did she try to hurt the chicks, just avoid them if possible. I never allowed her to be hurt by the babies but demanded she tolerate their antics for a few minutes. Consequently the babies were very well socialized and welcomed by their prospective new owners. No on ever complained their bird was ill tempered with a four legged pet. It was a joy to watch her. However, we lost her after a couple years due to a tumor on her heart. There will always be a special place in our hearts for Sally./p>
